The clutch is one of the most important parts of your vehicle as it allows you to control it – it’s sturdy and is very unlikely to break but it does wear down over time. This can be due to a mix of several things including its age and driving in bad conditions such as stop-start traffic or on hills. To avoid your clutch slipping you should get it checked from time to time.
The clutch transfers power from the engine to the wheels and allows you to be in control of your vehicle. Pressing down on the clutch pedal allows you to change gear and you can use your clutch for different scenarios. For example, when you’re waiting for traffic at the top of a steep road or when you need to move your vehicle more slowly than usual. The clutch works in a unique way that allows the clutch plate and the flywheel that connects the shaft coming from the engine and the shaft which turns the wheels.
When the clutch pedal isn’t depressed, the pressure plate keeps the clutch plate pushed against the flywheel. This connects the engine to the shaft and delivers the motion to the wheels on your vehicle. When the clutch pedal is depressed it can pull the pressure plate away from the clutch plate. This results in the connection between the engine the wheels being halted which allows the wheels to rotate due to their own movement and without power from the engine.
It can be hard to know whether or not your clutch needs to be replaced but there are some simple things you can do to check. If you sit in your vehicle and push the clutch pedal and it takes very little pressure to move, your clutch could be worn. We suggest going for a short drive where you can accelerate in 3rd or 4th gear. If the engine note rises but the vehicle does get faster you should get your clutch looked at as soon as possible.
Another thing you can do is start your vehicle and gradually go into 3rd gear whilst applying the clutch – you should then gradually release your foot off the clutch. If the vehicle stalls it means your clutch is in good condition but if your vehicle starts to drive without stalling, the clutch could be slipping. If this is the case you should bring your vehicle to our garage in Greenhithe. Your clutch is often forgotten about and there’s an assumption that it will always be working – we recommend keeping an eye out for any of these signs.
